Besalú

After leaving the Dali museum we headed to another really amazing place that is a medieval city called Besalú. Besalú is also in the region of Girona but has a totally different feel. There are just about 2500 residents in this town. It´s quiet, beautiful, GREEN and carries a lot of history especially for Jews that were expelled or condemned in the region.

Que disfruten las foticos!

I really liked this building...

Random street in Besalú

The Jewish Quarter where Jews were forced to live and pay to fund the entire town. Jews were forced to pay more taxes than any others in the community and although their community was small, they funded most of the region, and provided the most wealth. Eventually the Jews were told to convert to Catholicism or were forced to flee the country.

This is me very lightly and respectfully touching this corner of the door + subtly pointing to the info about the mezuzah which is affixed to the door frame of Jewish homes to fulfill the mitzvah with the words of the Torah on the door post of your home. It's to be placed on the right hand side of the door, and the position, vertical or horizontal depends on your particular religious beliefs. Usually a mezuzah is placed on the front door to protect those in the home and is a blessing of sorts for those in the home and is also a way of showing that God is within in the home. You are to kiss the mezuzah when you enter the house, or kiss a cloth that you then touch to the mezuzah as you enter or leave bringing you closer to the Torah thus closer to God. Those who are more religious will also place a mezuzah in every room of their home.

This was inside the Jewish Bath. Water was supposed to run constantly in the bath and was to purify and cleanse. You were supposed to dunk yourself under the water three times. Women were supposed to go to the bath to cleanse themselves after their period, having a baby, etc.

Really cute mom + pop shop in the town that had a really amazing wine and meat selection. There was a tray that was out so that we could try the various meats. I really liked the brownish colored one second from the right in this photo. It's pepper cured/crusted chorizo.

Locals dancing traditional dances in the town square...lovely but tiring-looking dances
