Me + Dalí in Figueres
This past Saturday I had my first work trip which went quite well for the most part. Each semester I am required to go on three day trips with the students and one weekend trip. I was really happy to get away and check out a smaller town. I am a city girl for the convenience that big cities bring but I would love to have a bed and breakfast or a farm somewhere as beautiful as the places I visited this weekend.
We went to the region of Spain on the way to France which is called Girona. The city we visited first is the city where mad and very talented artist Salvador Dalí was born. He built and designed his own museum. Some really amazing work can be found in the Dali museum as can the body of the artist. Creepy, exciting, disturbing and talented are the four words I'd use to describe the Dali Museum.
Check it out...
This is the face of Mae West who was an actress/comedienne etc. in the early 1900s. I couldn't do this piece of art any justice with this photo but Dali made her lips cushions like a couch, her nose into a fireplace, and her eyes are various sites in Paris.
More interesting but strange work from Dali
Around the museum there were several chain people and I really liked this boat and the view from this window...Makes you feel a bit like you're under water ¿no?
This is just a section of the ceiling inside of one of the rooms in the Dali museum.
This is actually not a painting. The Dali Museum used to be a Theater so it's basically a prop wall of sorts that was created that basically shows emptiness, Dali's connection with his homeland, humanity and life with the cracked skull that is also a fetus and all kinds of other interesting things...figure out the rest for yourself...
This entrance way was realllly fly to me. I love old preserved cars and the big girl on the hood of the car seemed very Dali what was creepy was what followed...
This guy and two people in the backseat were really pretty creepy. There is water dripping inside the car as though there was an automobile accident and they were underwater. The whole entrance is pretty much a scene under water after an accident with random chains, and his self appointed Emmy awards. Again, the entrance is extremely unnerving, creepy and exciting at the same time.
This is a portrait that Dali created depicting Picasso after they had a few differences...Good not to get on his bad side.
This is one of Dali's last works. Although most of his work is a bit morbid and violent this piece of art of a decomposing horse is very powerful. The colors in real life are so amazing and could only be made so by someone as talented as Dali.
Around Figueres during free time...
Those of you who have traveled with me in the past know that I have a fascination with kiddie rides in the middle of towns and even though I'm now way beyond the appropriate age for these rides, and although I usually can't manage to find my way out of them without hurting myself, I manage to get in or on everyone I find. There are more from this trip but I'll spare you...
