Obviously these are not my feet but this is just a photo to prove a point...we are wasteful and lazy and I'm tired of just stepping over things, and people talking the talk or giving money to fix the world but not getting up to actually see that it becomes betterWednesday, I chose to actually go out and DO something!
Here in Barcelona I'm working for a study abroad program + part of the program design is built in travel to other regions of the country. When the program purchased plane tickets for student's travel they checked the box that said they would donate 3 euro per student to offsetting CO2 emissions. What a great idea right? It's nice to think that we're concerned with the environment and what our extensive travel does to the environment. So when the marketing department from Clickair (low cost airline) called us to ask if we wanted to actually DO something, plant a tree each I thought, it would be a great way to give back to the earth, and to give back to the country that we're flying all around.
If you've read my post from the summer on Carbon Footprints and know my feelings about this whole Carbon Footprints fad you will understand in my opinion, paying $$$ to offset your laziness is tacky and pointless...it's about action. Don't just pay someone to fix your problems for you, play an active role in making the world better.
Because of my feelings about this whole Carbon Footprint "thing" I decided I would get my hands dirty and I planted my first tree with Clickair's initiative. I was really excited for myself. I was glad that I wasn't sitting around pontificating but was out there getting dirty but I was really disappointed that of all of the staff, I was the only one really interested in it. Everyone thought it was unnecessary and one person even said just give the money and ask the students if they want to go but don't make me do it. I thought that was super lame and just goes to prove that people are willing to pay money to offset their abuse of pretty much everything but won't get off their lazy asses and do anything.
Here is the end result! Tada!!!! My baby tree that will grow into a magnificent tree that will help to re-build the forest in the community of El PratIt was really exciting + I was glad to be apart of the group of people who took time off of their day of work and did something. I will definitely do it again. Still annoyed that people are so lame but hopefully in time (before it's too late) people will start to realize that money can't buy them air to breathe...

Love your blog. Wish Sarah did more of this while she was in Florence last year.
Has anyone told you that your facial features resemble your mother? You do. Enjoy it Little Zelda!
PS: I also read the "What White People Like" blog and had a big laugh. However, this morning on the elevator in the office, I saw an African American man wearing a Pea Coat! How do you explain that? :-)
