I'm not sure how I feel about the whole idea of the 'carbon footprint'. It seems to me like it is being used as a tool to make people sleep better at night in their big mansions, with their 4 SUVs parked outside and their helicopters on the rooftops, without feeling guilty about how they continue to screw up the planet.
I mean really...how many not wealthy people can really be devastating the environment so terribly? You have to be able to afford an airplane ticket, afford gas for an SUV, etc. to be able to make such an impact on the environment. Poor people can't really afford to be wasteful because they already don't have anything!
I'm caught somewhere in the middle as most middle class, or nomadic graduate students that were once upon a time middle class are. and I still wonder...Is this whole carbon offsetting thing really effective when people just pay for their environmentally unfriendly sins instead of taking time out of their busy carbon-using lives to...plant a tree? recycle their diet coke cans? buy really nice Priuses instead of Mercedes-Benz SUVs, and be held PERSONALLY accountable for their role in global enhancement and betterment instead of letting their checkbook do their work for them????
